Was just thinking about this myself. I'd really like to be able to sell gift cards for access to my site (teaching website). the gift card would have a random coupon. This module almost does this:

but it is not able to assign a specific role. The nice think about the above module (check it out and poke around) is that it can auto create a bunch of randomly generated registration codes.
So, for example... It'd be nice if someone got a gift card with the code on it and it was say for a 3 month subscription. The person signs up for their account and puts in the gift card code. It then gives them access for 3 months, after which they are prompted to upgrade to continue their subscription. something like that...
The other modules I've been looking at are "registration keys" and "registration role" fyi.
I just checked and the paypal gift certificates can not apply towards subscriptions - so that idea is nixed.
I think that the Gift Certificate would be great also. I was trying to figure out how someone could buy a three month subscription as present (Christmas, Birthday, etc.) and have the three months start on a certain date. This could provide some outstanding marketing opportunities if possible. Since PalPay doesn't allow a start date, I'm not quite sure how to do it.
I agree that this feature is needed. I will bump this up on the list of features to be added.

Tomorrow being Cyber Monday, I am wanting to market gift certificates to my teaching site. I see that you have done some nice work on the coupons but nothing that provides a true gift certificate experience. Here's a site that does it well in concept:

I've had a few forays into the gift card ideas, and made some modules for some clients, but nothing that is ready for release yet. I haven't found time to make it be universally applicable, rather than just catered to a certain client's needs.
That being said, I do plan to do some work on a gift membership module fairly soon, within the next week or two.
