I need some clarification about the emails sent for membership plans with recurring payments please.
If a plan is set to never expire until cancelled, can MS send a reminder email before the next payment is due to give the member the option of cancelling?
OK - If, for example, there is an annual recurring payment of 3 years, is the reminder sent only once at the end of the three year term, or for each of the three annual payments?

Only once when it gets close to the end of the 3 years.

No, currently this will only work for memberships that have an End of Term that can be calculated (anything except recur until cancelled).
