When my users' free-trial membership ends, the *link* to re-acquire the free-trial membership is correctly removed from their user account page... but if they bookmarked the link to get the free membership, or otherwise copy over the URL ("membership/purchase/3"), they can get another free-trial, and then another, and effectively never have to pay.
Is there an easy way around this?

Could you possibly do something similar where you disallow a "free trial" role from re-applying so that say a free plan authenticated users could still purchase a premium membership after their trial has expired?
Joel was kind enough to provide a patch that adds the 'Deny Roles' setting to Membership Plans.

You can use the Allow Roles settings in the plans, to make sure that the users can't buy the plan unless they are anonymous.
